What the Samhain?

It’s just another day, a pagan holiday. It is Halloween in Jersey City. The costumed are out already, hurrying across Exchange Place, gerbil scrambling through the turnstile.  A lanky business man squeezes by, self-conscious in frilly house coat and wig, swinging his black Tumi bag ahead of him. The Metro newspaper guy wears a bedspread, which he has wrapped around his middle, [...]

Little Glimpses

Little glimpses
pictures posted in windows and subways
seconds alone
minutes knowing you’re out there apart
Just a pause
one less beat of my heart
she gave me little glimpses
touches when I was half-asleep
little glimpses
notions I never thought I would keep
she gave me little glimpses
A vision of you, under streetlight
driving death-like in the rain
one more mile
one more speeding sign refracting by
one [...]

Good morning, Hackensack

Another day without daylight
in this dirty Jersey kitchen
the toaster oven’s burning
something left from last night’s supperthere are only seconds ticking
by the clock beneath the ceiling
that you promised me you’d fix
but it’s been monthsI wonder where the love went in our lives
as I soap the sudsy sponge against the knives
and curse my lesser moments
before my better [...]

The Daily Wind (rhymes with mind)

After all was said and done, there was only the winding of his watch that kept him regular. Every morning after the taking of a cup of joe, the shearing of the daily scratch, the tasting of the toast and jam. On with the shirt out of the dry cleaning shroud, the push, twist, turn [...]

Morticians Daughter

She tasted like death

Formaldehyde

Her perfect skin caked

With makeup pale

Like the dead

Her flaws carefully

Hidden for viewing

Holding her

I smell time

Catching up

Smothering me

Like a rotting rose

Pressed in a bible

Marsupial Beds

I come to you at night
When the air is solemn
I slit you open
At the belly
So I can crawl inside you
Like a marsupial
A furry pouch is just
Right to snuggle into
The perfect place
To grow up
The kangaroo is awkward
As an adult animal
He has this enormous body
Which makes him clumsy
Climbing into other
Marsupial beds
Sheets get in the way
Or he [...]

People

People
In the movies
Always cover the faces
Of the dead

The look of death
Is too disturbing
Face to face

Fascinating really
The soul is cold
The body hard
A glimpse is enough
Then shut the box
The peace is just too
Infectious

People
In real life
Always cover their faces
When looking at the dead
